  • In order to become certified as a Home Health Aide in California, one must satisfy the following requirements:

    1. Successfully complete a training program with a minimum of 120 hours, or an equivalent competency evaluation program approved by the CDPH. These training programs can be provided through a local community college, home health aide agency, or a number of state provided free programs. (Certified Nurse Aides may be dual‐certified as Home Health Aides with additional training)

    2. Complete a minimum of 20 Clinical Hours

    3. Obtain a criminal record clearance

    4. Obtain formal certification and register with CDPH

    Certification Renewal Requirements:
The Home Health Aide certificate typically expires two years after it was initially approved, on the certificate holder’s birthday. In order to maintain a certificate, the Home Health Aide must renew the certificate every two years, and receive a fresh criminal record clearance. The renewal form can be obtained from the state of California.

If a Home Health Aide does not renew a certificate within four years after its expired, the certificate cannot be renewed, restored, reissued, or reinstated. The only way to renew a certificate after four years is to complete a second certification training program.
