  • Rhode Island requires its prospective home health aides to complete their nursing aide certification in addition to a competency evaluation and their CNA training. This includes 100 hours of training and 20 hours working in a clinic.

    Rhode Island Nurse Aide Registry:
    Home health aides who wish to be listed in the state’s nurse aide registry must complete the training and testing as outlined by the Department of Health.

  • Rhode Island Department of Health licenses Home Nursing Care Providers and Home Care Providers. Home Nursing Care Providers can also be certified to meet the federal Medicare services requirements, authorized under federal regulations. Home Nursing Care Providers that are "certified for Medicare" are referred to as Home Health Agencies.

    Home Care Providers do not provide "skilled" services, but can provide assistance with daily living and personal care. Businesses that only provide homemaker and companion assistance (i.e. no personal care for direct hands-on assistance with daily living care, do not require a license).
